Art Exhibition: Old Time Religion

Updated: Mar 1, 2022

At the opening reception for the Ashe' Cultural Arts Center Art Exhibition "Maafa: Creativity, Faith, Tradition, Resilience" each artist gave a talk about what inspired their amazing artwork. My art "Come Sunday" is one installment of a project inspired by my grandmother a bible toting, choir singing, service raising, Southern church lady. I felt compelled to sing when I was introduced to do my artist talk, so, from my seat I rose, making my way through the audience, singing "Give Me That Old Time Religion" which, was one of my grandmothers' favorite gospel hymns. I didn't know I could sing but, to my surprise and delight by the time I reached the microphone and the podium elders in the audience had joined me in song. Whatever gospel hymn was my grandmothers' selection for the week, she would rehearse it religiously, sing it out loud or hum it out loud anywhere and everywhere, then she would always explain .... "Come Sunday, I'm going to sing that song in church". This statement was my inspiration for Come Sunday the photography series. Cosette Richard (c) 2018
